Fox Glacier
This was an adventure and a half. We booked to go walking on the glacier and were flown up in a helicopter with a guide. At the drop off point, the guide pointed out the barrels that were there for emergencies. At this point the weather was fine, so we set off walking on the glacier, then all of a sudden the guide said we need to move fast to get back to the drop off point as he could see fog coming in from the sea. And it did, really really fast, so much so, that we couldn't see the sea. We walked back to the drop off point and were fully expecting to have to spend the night on the ice, when suddenly the fog cleared and there were three helicopters there hovering, ready to pick us up and get us off the glacier pretty hastily.
