This is our simple website - running on a beaglebone black, it hosts our favourite recipes and cakes, and things that interest us. There's an area for the kids for when they start to learn computing at school, and a personal blog for us all

  11. This is the best one so far. I foolishly promised my daughter the best cake ever, as I didn't make her one last year, so this is what I came up with. The pictures probably don't show it, but it's huge 30x24 inches. She had a party at waterworld with her mates, so it made sense to have a topical cake.

    The mountain is made from meringue, the pool and water flows are elderflower jelly. Each girl had an individual constume and their own name.

    Some real learning points on this:

    Jelly, no matter how well it's set with loads of gelatine, turns to liquid in contact with icing. This was solved with a bit of cling film which I think added to the water effect to make it look more like rapids.

    A mountain of meringue take eons to dry out in the oven - so much more sensible to make chunks first then glue them together with more meringue.

    Don't make the Jelly in a bowl and then transfer it to a hole in the cake - it's not easy to transfer - make it in situ.
