Chateau Pressac St Emilion

Chateau Pressac isn't a grand gru yet...but watch this space. We visited for a degustation and met the owner who's really nice. He spent over an hour just chatting with us, telling us how he bought the chateau in disrepair and restored it, and is now trying to get the grand cru classification for his wine. We learned a lot from him; his vines are in different locations, some up high on chalky land, some on lower fertile slopes. He grows both cabernet and merlot grapes, but he reckons, that he can't really tell the difference between the type of grapes grown at the same location, but he can tell the difference between grapes on the higher land compared to those grown on the lower slopes. In other words, it's the terroir that make the flavour not the grape type. He even thinks in the future with global warming, that they may need to change the vines to those more suitable for the future climate.
He was telling us about the classifications to get the Grand Cru status, how they rank on a number of categories, and how his biggest failing was that his wine was not expensive enough. Well he's got a few years to improve that before the next classication period.
